Welcome to our 14th edition of Gimme Some Truth!
Join us on our opening night for Confessional Cinema, a short film program curated by local filmmaker Aaron Zeghers, featuring 10 Canadian and international works examining the cinematic confessional. This program includes films by Howardena Pindell, Meesoo Lee and Danielle Sturk.
We’re delighted to present Replanted Roots: Immigrant Documentary Filmmakers in Conversation, a panel discussion on the experiences of documentary filmmakers newly arrived in Canada, in partnership with DOC Manitoba.
We’re also incredibly excited to welcome artist and curator Daniel Barrow for a presentation of his recently completed, 2023 iteration of the hybrid curatorial/archival/expanded cinema project Winnipeg Babysitter, examining Winnipeg’s unique history of public access television.
Join us on the closing night of the festival for our annual documentary challenge Gimme 10 in 30!, featuring 10 new short documentaries created by local filmmakers made in the 30 days prior to the festival. DOC Manitoba will be presenting a cash prize of $500 for the audience favourite.
Lastly, we’re proud to present a collection of thoughtful and challenging documentary films throughout the festival, including Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Pictures of Ghosts, a multidimensional journey through time, sound, architecture and filmmaking; Paul B. Preciado’s poetic and celebratory Orlando, My Political Biography; To Kill a Tiger, the latest from Canadian documentary filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, is a harrowing look at an Indian family’s quest for justice; Lina Soualem’s Bye Bye Tiberias is an intimate documentary about four generations of women and their shared legacy of separation; In James Burns & Stevie Salas’ Boil Alert, Activist Layla Staats shows the faces and personal stories behind the struggle of First Nations reserves to receive a basic human right: drinkable water.
We’ve also programmed a wonderful collection of new local and Canadian short narrative and experimental documentaries that explore personal histories, family relationships, miscommunications and loss.
We can’t wait to welcome you all back to the Dave Barber Cinematheque this December 13th to 17th for our 14th Annual Gimme Some Truth Documentary Festival.
Hope to see you all there!
