Dir. James Robert Baker
1984, USA, 95 min
Shot for $2000 by “James Dillinger” aka James Robert Baker, a playwright-novelist-anarchist who was once described as “the world’s angriest gay man,” Blonde Death is a major triumph in the shot-on-video universe. This movie wages war on suburban America, attacking the concepts of family and love with murderous wit. Blonde Death draws possible dismissive comparisons to early John Waters, but it’s as strong as Waters’ best.

“We shot part of Blonde Death at Disneyland. Director James Baker told us, ‘We’re gonna be shooting in Disneyland. I’ve got the tickets, so get ready. We’re just gonna drive-in and shoot the footage.’ And that’s exactly what we did. Nobody stopped us, nobody said anything. We were lucky. That’s not something that could ever be pulled off today.”
