The Winnipeg Film Group is pleased to announce that Ian Bawa is the recipient of the 2024 MFM Manitoba Film Hothouse Award for Creative Development.
Ian Bawa is a South Asian filmmaker from Winnipeg, Manitoba. His work explores family, masculinity, caregiving, and grief through intimate, character-driven storytelling. His short film Strong Son premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival, initiating a body of work centered on father–son relationships.
Ian is the director and host of Super Channel’s feature documentary Seeking Fire and the CBC Gem documentary series Finding Diamond, which he co-hosts with his dog, Diamond. His film My Son Went Quiet premiered at the 2024 Slamdance Film Festival and screened at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival. His short film The Best, a companion piece and pseudo-sequel to Strong Son, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in 2024. In 2024, he won the Hot Docs / Doc Institute Breakthrough Pitch for his feature documentary Brown Envelope, receiving a development deal with CBC.
Ian is an alumnus of the TIFF Filmmakers Lab, ReelWorld E20, Netflix’s Diversity of Voices Initiative, and the Norman Jewison Canadian Film Centre’s Director’s Lab. His debut feature film Strong Son is supported by Telefilm Canada’s Talent to Watch program and was selected for the 2025 TIFF Every Story Accelerator. The film is currently in post-production and slated for release in 2026.
