They All Lie is a sensuous melodrama wrapped in a tantalizing intellectual mystery about Argentina’s nineteenth-century history of dictatorship and liberalism. Set in a secluded country house where a group of girls and boys in their twenties play games of love and chance, invent stories, spy on each other, and plan a robbery, the film situates us in Jacques Rivette territory with its arabesque plot lines, camera movements, and long takes, but also announces Piñeiro as one of the most exciting young filmmakers to come out of the new Argentine cinema.
